While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes: • Mateo Ruiz is a marine ecologist. • In 2016, Mateo Ruiz developed ReefEcho, an acoustic system that identifies reef-fish species without capturing them. • ReefEcho and diver visual surveys share one feature: both document fish communities without capturing fish. • Unlike diver visual surveys, ReefEcho can collect observations throughout the night. • In 2017, researchers tested both methods on 30 reef sites. • ReefEcho identified the reference species at 28 of them; diver visual surveys identified the reference species at 20. • ReefEcho identified nocturnal squirrelfish at a sheltered reef. • ReefEcho also identified grunts at an offshore reef. • The original equipment could not be used at deep offshore reefs because it required a diver to operate it continuously. • Motivated by that problem, Mateo Ruiz created an autonomous ReefEcho recorder in 2020. • The method has three steps: first, record reef sounds; next, isolate repeating sound patterns; finally, match the patterns with a verified call library. • Specialists already familiar with Mateo Ruiz and ReefEcho may not know that the adaptation extended overnight monitoring to deep offshore reefs.
