While researching a topic, a student has taken the following notes: • Lina Cho is a conservation scientist. • In 2017, Lina Cho developed PrismMap, an imaging system that maps hidden pigment layers without removing samples. • PrismMap and infrared reflectography share one feature: both examine artworks without removing material. • Unlike infrared reflectography, PrismMap records a broader range of wavelengths. • In 2018, researchers tested both methods on 23 painted panels. • PrismMap detected hidden pigment layers in 20 of them; infrared reflectography detected hidden pigment layers in 14. • PrismMap revealed indigo beneath a coastal scene. • PrismMap also revealed vermilion beneath a portrait. • The original equipment could not be used at remote chapels because the murals there could not be moved to a laboratory. • Motivated by that problem, Lina Cho created a portable version of PrismMap in 2021. • The method has three steps: first, calibrate the camera; next, scan the artwork; finally, compare the recorded spectra with a pigment database. • Specialists already familiar with Lina Cho and PrismMap may not know that the adaptation made the imaging system usable at remote chapels.
